Looking for a fun and easy project to do with the kids? Why not make your own bamboo wind chimes? With just a few supplies, you can create these beautiful and unique pieces of art.

Introduction

Bamboo wind chimes are a beautiful addition to any home. They are also relatively easy to make, and only require a few supplies that can be easily found at your local craft store. In this guide, we will show you how to make your own bamboo wind chime in just a few simple steps.

What you’ll need

-Bamboo poles of various lengths
-A saw
-Drill with a 1/2″ bit
-String or twine
-A heavy object to use as a weight (a rock or piece of metal)

1. Cut the bamboo poles to the desired length. You will need at least four poles to make a wind chime.
2. Drill a hole through the center of each pole. The hole should be big enough to fit your string or twine through.
3. Tie one end of your string or twine to the weight, and thread it through the holes in the bamboo poles.
4. Tie the other end of the string or twine to a support, such as a tree branch or beam on your porch or patio.
5. Hang your wind chime and enjoy!

Step 1: Preparing the bamboo

The first step is to prep the bamboo. You will need to cut the bamboo into pieces of the desired length – ours were about 18 inches long. The nodes (the thicker sections of the bamboo) will need to be taken out so that the pieces can slide into each other. We used a utility knife to make a slit length-wise along the node and then were able to snap it in half.

Step 2: Cutting the bamboo

Use a saw to cut the bamboo into pieces of different lengths. You will need at least six pieces, but more will create a more interesting sound. The pieces should be about the same thickness so they will dry and age at the same rate.

Hang the bamboo pieces on a line or other drying rack in a warm, sunny location. Allow them to dry for several weeks or until they are significantly lighter in color than when they were cut.

Step 3: Drilling the holes

Use a drill bit that is slightly smaller in diameter than the desired width of your wind chimes. For example, if you want your chimes to be 1/2 inch wide, use a 3/8 inch drill bit.

Step 4: Assembling the chimes

Now that you have all your materials ready, it’s time to assemble the wind chimes. First, cut a length of fishing line or thread that is approximately 36 inches long. Tie one end of the line to the top ring of the wind chime. Next, thread beads onto the line in any pattern or design you like. Once you have added all the beads, tie the other end of the line to the bottom ring of the wind chime. Finally, hang your bamboo wind chime from a hook or nail in a location where it will be able to catch a breeze. Enjoy the soothing sound of your homemade wind chime!

Use thin wire or fishing line to string the chimes. The top of each chime should have a small hole drilled into it, big enough to fit the wire through. String the chimes in order from longest to shortest. If you want, you can add beads or other decorations between the chimes.

Tie a loop at the end of the wire, and make sure it’s big enough to slip over a hook or nail. Hang your wind chime outdoors in a spot where there’s plenty of air movement.
